How to get into the Google map pack: a practical checklist for local businesses

The three businesses in Google's local map get most of the calls. Here is a practical, step-by-step checklist to improve your Google Business Profile and rank in the map pack.
“Thank you for supporting local” sign on a shop window

Search for “plumber near me” or “dentist in Fort Worth” and look at what appears first. Before the regular results, Google shows a map with three businesses. That box — the local map pack — is where most local searchers click, call or ask for directions. If you're not in it, most of those customers never see you.

The good news: the map pack isn't won by the biggest budget. It's won by the most complete, most active and most trusted profile close to the searcher. Much of that is in your control.

How Google decides who appears

Google describes three main factors for local results:

  • Relevance — how well your profile matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance — how far your business is from the searcher or the location in the search.
  • Prominence — how well known and trusted your business is, based on reviews, links, articles and your overall web presence.

You can't move your shop closer to every customer, but you can dramatically improve relevance and prominence.

The checklist

1. Choose the right primary category

Your primary category is one of the strongest relevance signals. Pick the most specific one that describes your main service — “Roofing contractor”, not “Contractor”. Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer.

2. Fill in every field

Services with descriptions, service areas, hours (including holiday hours), attributes, booking link, products and a natural business description. Complete profiles are easier for Google to match to searches — and more convincing for people.

3. Use your real business name

Adding keywords to your business name (“Best Plumber Dallas — Joe's Plumbing”) violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Use the name on your signage and documents.

4. Add real photos, regularly

Photos of your team, your work, your vehicles and your premises help people choose you. Upload new ones every few weeks rather than fifty at once.

5. Build a steady stream of reviews

Review count, recency and rating all matter. Ask every customer consistently — a short text with a direct review link after the job works best — and reply to every review, good or bad.

6. Post updates

Weekly posts about projects, offers and news show Google and customers that the business is active.

7. Connect a strong website

Your website is part of your prominence. A fast site with a page for each service, your address and phone number in the footer and LocalBusiness structured data reinforces everything in your profile.

8. Keep your details consistent everywhere

Your name, address and phone number should match across your website, Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Yelp and local directories. Inconsistencies create doubt.

How long does it take?

Fixing categories and completing a profile can change visibility within weeks. Reviews and prominence build over months. The businesses that win are rarely the ones with one big push — they're the ones who keep the profile active every week.
